A TCF Bank branch at a Jewel-Osco store on the Northwest Side was robbed this afternoon, according to Chicago police.

The bank -- located at 3570 N. Elston Ave. in the Avondale neighborhood -- was robbed about 1:45 p.m., said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman.

The robber approached a teller, handed her a threatening note and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, O'Brien said. The only description police had was that the man was white and about 6-foot-1 or 6-foot-2.


No one was in custody.

An Englewood man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend on Saturday, Chicago police said today.

Gerald Rufus, 28, was arguing with his girlfriend Theresa Russell, 23, at his home in the 6400 block of South Morgan Street, police said.

Officers found Russell's body in an alley near that address at about 2:50 a.m. Saturday. Initial reports said she was shot in the back, but an autopsy determined she died of a gunshot wound to one arm.

Rufus was arrested and charged at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday after he gave conflicting accounts of the incident to police, said Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak.

Records show that Rufus has numerous arrests on his criminal record dating back to 1998. In August he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor simple battery, records indicate.
